Korean American Youth Musical Group (KAYMG)

Korean American Youth Musical Group (KAYMG) is performing arts group of the Northern California Music and Art Culture Center (NCMACC), specializing in traditional Korean drumming known the SulChangGu Dance. Starting with only a handful of American-born Korean youth, KAYMG blossomed into young public performers, talented and confident about their cultural heritage. KAYMG members meet every Friday for three hours to develop their Korean language skills while honing and perfecting their performance skills. Through the program, they explore Korean ancient wisdom while having fun and building new friendships with their peers. Our goal is to broaden young minds through a process of reclaiming one's inherited culture that extends the definition of one's identity. Though this introduction to Korean culture, KAYMG encourages the affirmation of self through a social process of recovery; recovering one's heritage, recovering one's ethnic role, and recovering one's identity, thereby enriching their families and their lives.

Korean Traditional Drum Class

Here at the center, we have noticed the increasing popularity of Samgomu, a traditional Korean drum dance. In the past, we have only offered it to the younger participants, but now we are starting a new class for the adults. Samgomu is a fun and high-energy drum dance. So prepare for a workout!

Are you qualified for this class?

Anyone that is interested in this class can join. You don't have to be experienced in drumming at all. They will teach you. All you need to be is being motivated to learn. Also, if you are interested in the Korean Culture, this would be a great experience.

What is Samgomu?

Samgomu is a traditional Korean three-drum dance inspired by Seungmu, a Buddhist Monk Dance. Many rhythm patterns are played by hitting the drumsticks against each other and at either the center or the rim of the drums. The complex rhythmic patterns are balanced with the drum performance.

If you aren't interested in Samgomu, we also offer two other drum classes. We teach Janggu, the most widely used percussion instrument in most Korean traditional music and Korean Drums.
