Sam Bass
Cellist Sam Bass, while a student of Irene Sharp, recieved a bachelor's of music from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in 1994. A cellist with many intersts, Sam has performed in and composed for several ecclectic rock ensembles (see loopthis.com and hhjazzsf.com). Currently pursueing intersts in jazz performance and composition Sam performs and teaches regularly around the bay area.

Jiyon Son
Jiyon Son received her B.M from San Francisco Conservatory of Music and recently finished her M.M program. During her studies at the SFCM, she has sung as a soloist with KAMSA Orchestra and SFCM Baroque Orchestra. Her operatic roles are Damon in Handel¡¯s Acis and Galatea, Witch in Dido and Aeneas and Olympia in Tales of Hoffman. From 2000 to present, she has been a scholarship student at the both San Francisco International Summer Music Festival and San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

Amy Norman

Gabhor Utomo
Gabhor Utomo grew up in Jakarta, Indonesia. He moved to San Francisco, California in 1997 to pursue his interest in Art. He received his Bachelor of fine art in Illustration from The Academy of Art University in 2003. Since his graduation Gabhor has been working as a freelance illustrator. His works consist of children¡¯s books, advertising illustration, editorial and much more. You can find out more about his artworks on his website at www.gabhorutomo.com. During his career Gabhor has received Winsor & Newton Painting Award, and has won second place price from Associated Arts of Ocean Shores, Washington. He has also won first place poster contest from Mount Tamalpais¡¯ Mountain Play Association for his painting of Oklahoma and Fiddler on the Roof in 2005 and 2006.

TAE KWON DO

Michael Mar
Michael has experience interacting with a variety of ages and diverse group of students. His experience include but is not limited to over 7 years of competitive martial arts in local and national tournaments, over 12 years of instructing students, and over 7 years as a coach in highly competitive regional and national tournaments. Michael has been working as the head Martial Arts instructor at the Jefferson Elementary School after he got his 4th Dan Tae Kwon Do (Kukkiwon) certificate in 2006 . He was also the coach of the Junior Olympic Tae Kwon Do in 2002 and Junior Olympic, Team Trials Tae Kwon Do in 2007.

San Francisco International Summer Music Festival Faculty

PIANO

Mack McCray
Mack McCray received B.M and M.M degrees from Juilliard School, where he studied under Irwin Freundlich. He won the silver medal in the International Georges Enesco Competition, first prize in the Charleston Symphony and San Francisco Symphony young artists Competition, Juilliard¡¯s Edward Steuermann Memorial Prize and a grant from the Martha Baird Rockefeller Foundation-all in the 1969-1970 seasons. He has been an invited guest artist at the Festival D¡¯Automne in Paris, Seville¡¯s Great Interpreters Cycle, the UNESCO Festival of International Artists at Monte Carlo, the Bucharest Philharmonic¡¯s Bach/Beethoven/Brahms Festival, Hong Kong¡¯s City Hall Concert Series. Currently he is a piano faculty member at San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

Min Jung Lee
Born in Korea , pianist Min Jung Lee received her Bachelor ¡¯ s degree from the Seoul National University and won first prize at her debut in the Chun-Choo National Piano Competition. She earned her Master ¡¯ s degree at Indiana University and later received her Doctorate at the Yale School of Music where she studied with Peter Frankl. Ms. Lee received second prize at the Young Artists ¡¯ Competition (1990) and is also the recipient of the Yale School of Music Alumni Association Prize, the Charles S. Miller Prize as well as the Ye-Eum Cultural Foundation Award in Chamber Music. Her performances, as soloist and chamber musician, have taken her to Europe , the United States and the Far East including numerous cities throughout Korea . Ms. Lee has performed as soloist with orchestras such as the Russian Philharmonic Orchestra, Seoul Symphony, Korean Symphony and the Yale Symphony Orchestra. Recordings include the KBS FM ¡° Korean Musicians ¡± CD series and the recent Soma Trio album ¡° Reminiscence ¡± (Sony Classical/Korea). Currently, she is a professor at Konkuk University in Seoul and is an active member of the Korea Festival Ensemble and the Soma Trio.


VOICE

Jane Randolph
/Piano
Jane Randolph¡¯s twenty-five years of experience teaching voice to students has led her across North America: from L¡¯Atelier de L¡¯Opera de Montreal and L¡¯Universite de Montreal to establishing private studios in San Diego, San Francisco and New York. Her students have sung in major national and international opera companies and have been winners of countless prestigious competitions, such as the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, the San Francisco Opera Auditions and the Operalia-Domingo Competition. After completing her studies at the University of California at Santa Barbara, the University of California at Los Angeles and the Hochschule fur Musik in Freiburg, Germany, Ms. Randolph spent four seasons as a coloratura soprano at the Staatstheater in Luzern, Switzerland, and subsequently enjoyed an extensive career in opera, recital and oratorio in the United States, Europe and Australia. Currently she is a voice faculty member at San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

Janet Bookspan
/Stage Director
She is known for recreating neglected works from the past, as well as staples of the operatic repertoire. Her opera assignments have included productions for the Caramoor Festival, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, and Opera Columbus among others. Ms. Bookspan was the drama coach and dialogue director for the New York City Opera and was the stage director and drama coach for the Metropolitan Opera Finalists concert. She was formerly head of the Opera Department at SUNY-Purchase and has served on the faculties of the Juilliard School, Curtis Institute, the Manhattan School of Music and Mannes School of Music. She has performed as narrator soloist with orchestras around the country, and has been a commentator for Live From Lincoln Center. She can be heard on several commercial recordings and she is the author of Dramatic Perspectives of Roles and Arias.

Ross Harper
/Stage Director
Having recently made his debut with Los Angeles Opera as Kromov in THE MERRY WIDOW, versatile tenor/actor Ross Harper has been called "Opera¡¯s mad genius" by Kent Nagano, "Opera¡¯s man for all seasons" by heldentenor Jess Thomas and "Our modern Schikaneder" by the great lyric tenor Leopold Simoneau. With a repertoire of 175 roles, he has sung under solo contracts with San Francisco Opera, San Francisco Symphony, San Jose Symphony, Long Beach Opera, San Jose Opera, Carmel Bach Festival, and many others. Ross?has summed up these experiences in a unique staged recital, GODS AND GOBLINS, recently presented by Columbia Artists¡¯ Community Concerts. Ross¡¯ comic acting creations in television commercials have been seen internationally. He toured the world in PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. A triple ? threat artist,.Ross¡¯ many opera translations have been?sung around the nation. Besides serving as director in residence at North Bay Opera in Fairfield, he has served as stage director with Eugene Opera and? Opera Idaho. Soon Ross will direct HANSEL AND GRETEL with Pacific Repertoire Opera in San Luis Obispo.


STRING

Byung-Woo Kim
/Violin
He has been Concertmaster of the San Jose Symphony from 1994-1998. He holds a B.A from both the University of Michigan and the Julliard School of Music, where he was Concertmaster at the Juilliard Symphony. In 1991, he was the soloist and conductor of Vivaldi¡¯s Four Seasons with the San Jose Symphony. He has performed the complete Beethoven violin sonatas for the Beethoven Center at San Jose State University. In 1995, he was invited to perform in the ¡°Concertmaster Series¡± recital in San Francisco. He has just recently performed the Mozart a Major Violin concerto with the Master Sinfonia Chamber Orchestra. Mr. Kim has served on the faculties of the National Music Camp of Interlochen under the All-State Program and Summer Music Monterey. Since 1997 He has been currently a faculty member at Santa Clara University.

Zoya Leybin
/Violin
Born in Riga, Latvia, Zoya Leybin began her studies in violin at the age of seven when she entered the state music school. At age 15, her professional career began in solo and chamber music groups throughout the former Soviet Union. In 1962, she was awarded second prize in an all-USSR competition for young performers. That same year, Y. I. Yankelevich invited her to study at the Moscow Conservatory. Ms. Leybin was concertmaster of the Latvian State Chamber Orchestra. She also has been a member of the Alma-Alta Orchestra, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Denver Symphony and is currently first violinist in the San Francisco Symphony. Ms. Leybin has performed with the Chamber Soloists of San Francisco, the Stanford String Quartet and the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra.

Andrew Luchansky
/Cello
Andrew Luchansky, is the cellist in the Sun Quartet, currently in residence at California State University, Sacramento where he is professor of cello and chamber music. From 1990 to 1993 he served as professor of cello at the Florida State University School of Music. Mr. Luchansky earned a Master of Music degree from State University of New York at Stony Brook and a Bachelor of Music degree from the New England Conservatory of Music. Students of Mr. Luchansky have been winners in numerous state and national competitions and are members of symphony orchestras throughout the United States. His performances with Baroque Southeast (a period instrument ensemble) have been heard frequently on National Public Radio's "Performance Today." In recent summers, Mr. Luchansky has been a guest artist or faculty member at the Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music, Summer Music West, and the San Diego Chamber Music Workshop. As a recording artist, Mr. Luchansky has recorded on the Sony Classical label.

Kyung-Hwa Kim
/Chamber Coach
She attended the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and Peabody Conservatory of Music and Indiana University where she received her B.A and M.M. Ms. Kim is the winner and recipient of various competitions and awards including the Seattle Young Artist Competition, the Concerto Competition at Peabody, Baltimore All Country Competition and many others. Subsequently, she was featured as a promising musical talent on P.B.S. TV. In 1998, she was invited to perform for the President of Korea. She has performed with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and the U.M.B.C. Orchestra. Also Ms. Kim played with the Monterey Symphony and Lake Tahoe Music Festival. Recently, Ms. Kim recorded with a CD album with Chiosun, a company based in Korea.

Extension Program Faculty

ASIAN ART

Feng Chen
Feng Chen graduated from Guangxi University, China. She began teaching Chinese brush painting in 1986 at the Culture Palace of Youth in China, while working as the art director at Beijing Rongbaozai Art Gallery, the only art gallery directly under the Cultural Ministry of China. Services of the gallery included: publishing, collection and exhibition, reproduction, and selling. During her time working at the gallery, Feng Chen had the opportunity to develop her skills and study with famous masters. After moving to the U.S., she continued to teach brush painting and calligraphy classes at a number of institutions, including: Sunset Beacon Center, Randall Museum, S. F. Public Library, Japanese Culture Center, City College Asian Art Club, S. F. Botanical Garden, and Asian Art Museum family program. Currently, she teaches brush painting to CAIS Middle School students.

EUROPEAN ART

Joy Chung
Joy Chung has received her B.F.A. Degree in Sculpture and has teaching credentials from Seoul National University in Seoul, Korea. She is an associate of Applied Science Degree in Fashion Design from Parsons School of Design in New York City. In addition, she is a visual merchandiser and a product designer in the Bay Area.

TAI CHI

Zach Ma
Certified by Tai Chi Chuan World Federation in 1980, Zach Ma represents direct third generation lineage to Yang Cheng-Fu, considered the greatest teacher of the Yang Tai Chi method. He has been teaching Tai Chi and Chi Kung for almost thirty years. He taught for the City College for eighteen years. Currently he teaches ¡°Tai Chi Morning Workout¡± at Fort Mason, and at the Fitness West Health Club. He also teaches Push Hands at the Doc Fai-Wong Martial Arts Center. A national and international champion in Tai Chi Forms and Push Hands, he was a member and winner in the first team to represent the U.S. in China in 1988. Zach was also a winner in 2006, in the First World Cup Tai Chi Tournament, held in China. Zach studies Tai Chi with Grandmaster Doc Fai-Wong, and trained with Hu Yuen-Chou, who learned Yang Style Tai Chi from the famous Yang Cheng-Fu. He studied Chi Kung with the late Professor Peng Si Yu and Min Ou Yang, two of China¡¯s most famous Chi Kung teachers. He graduated with his MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1983, and is a well-known contemporary artist. Zach is also a world-class archer, and former California State Champion, competing at Olympic Level.
